Actually, I never left to start with, but with the slow pace at which I was updating my site, I might as well have been away or something. Once again, blame Andy for taking up my time during his visit here.
So what have I been doing? Watching movies. In one summer, I’ve watched more movies than the last 3 years or something. Andy always goes on a movie spree during the summers so I naturally joined him during his time here. Besides the stuff we watched on the big screen, I will be reviewing the ones I caught up with via my computer and Broadway… I’ll be listing them based roughly on the venue I saw them.
Lion King On Broadway - If you’re in New York, find a chance to see a Broadway show. It’s a MUST. I suggested Andy see Lion King, since that show is by far my favorite. He wasn’t disappointed. Between the nostalgic Lion King movie replaying in your head and the fascinating production development and cast, you feel like a kid again. Having been my second time seeing it, I realized that this time around, almost the entire audience consisted of families with little kids. I do remember there being more adults when I first saw it, about 10 years ago… Yeah I’m that old okay? 9.0
Star Trek – I’m no Trekky but I could be one if they come out with a new series based on what I saw in theaters. Between the massive amount of lensflare and slapstick comedy, I was sold. It was shiny but when you think about it, the plot isn’t that deep. Well, I liked the shinyness… 8.0
Terminator Salvation - If you saw the trailers, that was the movie. You can pretty much guess the ending. The half robot dude dies and John Conner lives to fight another day. Also known as Batman with lung cancer. It was neither that thrilling or new and I was more interested in the supporting character Marcus Wright, who seemed way cooler anyway. Well that’s the problem with building upon classics. You can never match up, although some people try harder… 7.5
Pixar’s Up - Join the bandwagon of fun… Alright, this movie got super high ratings from critics, even more than Wall-E which is just ridiculous. Great movie with really touching scenes and if you like old people, this is for you. But it’s no Wall-E. I mean that was robot love man… This was a boyscout you later realize is supposed to be an Asian and a grumpy old man with a valid reason to be grumpy. Old people love… Reminds me of the movie, “The Notebook.” 8.0
The Proposal - Love comedy that wins. Not only is my secret woman-crush, Sandra Bullock in it, but Ryan Reynolds actually plays a believable younger guy in love with an older woman. (Hawt…) Plus Betty White was there to remind us how old we all are and crack some jokes. Cliched but enjoyable. 8.0
Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen - You want plot and a great storyline? Well don’t expect that from this movie. Everything else though, yes they deliver. Sex kittens, kitten calendars, comedy, robots ripping each other’s faces apart in epic battles… Did I mention robots ripping each other apart? Because the flashyness to this movie was phenomenal. Too bad the plot was boring and the jokes and stereotypes on “Black also known as African American” (political correctness my…) robots were just annoying to me. In the words of an audience member of when my brother went to see this movie… (Paraphrased.) “Oh snap, that cracker just got his bitch stolen! Stupid cracker!” 8.0
Public Enemies - Andy was sick when we went to watch this. (Thank you NYC air. Until you’ve caught the wiff of warm bum urine in the air, you haven’t experienced New York City.) Basically it’s more of a biography on film and I wasn’t exactly sold. Johnny Depp is always cool to watch but this movie bored me out of my mind. Plus there was no umph to it. I guess John Dillinger’s life wasn’t that exciting for me… 6.5
Brüno - I had such high hopes for this movie. You would think the creator of Borat would be able to deliver twice… But no… Between all the crude jokes and massive amount of penises, I was still bored. It managed to get a few stifled laughs, but that’s about it. Was it fabulous? No. Fashionable? No. Had a statement?… How about a one liner…? 6.0
Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince - Well I dragged Andy into this one only because I’d seen and read it all so I had to follow this one… I knew the book was boring and was hoping they’d make the movie more interesting, being on the big screen and all. Boy was I wrong. It was just as boring. I hear the final book will be two movies (more money?) so if it doesn’t go off with a bang, I’m going to be pissed. Someone teach Ron how to act already. 6.0
G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra - I knew this was going to be a flashy movie with no plot. And I was dead on the money. Sad thing is, I know they’re going to make a sequel out of it and I know I’m going to want to watch it, one way or another… Damn sequels… This movie was all cheesy action and one liners and what the hell is wrong with Storm Shadow’s outfit? Snake Eyes gets a cool rubber suit because he’s with the good guys and Storm Shadow gets cloth and velcro? That’s the only reason he lost, okay? Although Snake Eyes on that car with that pistol… Damn that was good. 7.5
District 9 - The must see movie of the summer. After countless amounts of crappy movies, I finally found one worthy of watching. Between the storyline, documentary styled footage, humans exploding into a gooey paste, and a robot that made more gooey paste, this movie was fantastic. I fuckin’ love prawns. 9.5
Julia and Julie - I saw this with my parents. As predicted, this audience consisted of old couples and women. I’m not familiar with Julia Child, but my mom says Meryl Streep did a good job in acting as her with the little movements. I always did love the way she acted. (The Devil Wears Prada and Mama Mia) Her range is very good and she does a lot of subtle things that makes her believable. Too bad the story wasn’t that great to start with… 6.5
Inglourious Bastards - Sadly, all the good movies were saved till the end of this summer. I have no idea how much money Andy and I wasted on crappy tickets to crappy movies and popcorn and soda. Oh and nachos and sour patch kids. Anyway, this movie was also fantastic if you like dark humor, a lot of blood, and swastikas being cut into the foreheads of people. 9.0
True Lies - I wanted to see some movies during my time at home as well so Andy supplied. This is an old film with Aaaarnooold… So I had to see it. Especially when I heard it was a romantic comedy. I was like whaaa? I know he did Kindergarden Cop but… Anyway, it was slow at first but picked up and didn’t disappoint. I was intrigued. 7.5
40 Year Old Virgin - Can you believe I hadn’t seen this movie yet? Well after I saw it, I understood why. Guy humor is so stupid. The awkwardness that guys also go through are so… If only you men knew how insecured most women are…. You’d have an easier time, haha. 7.5
The Hangover – Another guy movie. Same director or producer or something too. Same problem for me. And the “main character” was missing for about 90% of the movie so… 7.0
Pineapple Express – This movie should have won for best fight scene in that stupid MTV award. Screw Twighlight’s crappy pulley effects. (Teen vampires… Bring back Lestat.) How many times do you get to see a man stomp on the balls of another man while he is on the floor in submission? Great acting with a very laid back environment. Funny too. 8.0
Thank You For Smoking - Ahahaha… I wanted to see this movie when it first came out. The title was so genius. And in the end, it delivered what I wanted – An intelligent conversation. Good movie? Meh… Good points? Definitely. 8.0
Pulp Fiction - This was one of those random movies that made me go… Whaaa…? Not really a plot but plenty of action and interesting dialogue. Naturally for a Quentin Tarantino movie. Rated R of course. 7.5
Slumdog Millionaire - You might notice that foreign films about a part of Asia are usually about poor people or of ancient times. I guess Westerners are having trouble accept an Asian with a limo unless they belong to the Yakuza? (For the last time, The Departed is NOT based on a true Boston story. It’s the remake to a Hong Kong film called Infernal Affairs. Does anyone know that? No. Does everyone know The Grudge and The Ring were orignally Japanese movies? Yes. That says something now doesn’t it…?) Err… Anyway about this movie. Touching, romantic, blah blah Bollywood and dance… Cue the dance please. 8.5
The Simpsons Movie – Spider pig, Spider pig… Basically this felt like a 1 hour special. I don’t particularly enjoy Simpsons like I do anymore, because of the lack of humor nowadays, but this movie brought back old times. Decent enough. 7.5
Underworld Rise of the Lycans - Nothing ever beats the first movie. But anything without Michael, the blue halfbreed is better. (Why is he blue again? Vampires are white and Lycans are hairy and grey, brown and black and that makes BLUE???) This story covered the origins of the war and blah blah, I’m so glad I didn’t pay to see this. 6.5
X-Men Origins: Wolverine - Dear gawd no, I did not see this in theaters. I actually saw this a few days ago via my computer. Besides ruining the storyline of the orignal X-Men universe, they managed to also ruin a lot of characters for me and bore the crap out of me at the same time. Cheesy and quite ridiculous actually. Do people really pay to see this stuff? 5.0
I Love You Man - Finally… An INTELLIGENT comedy at which I don’t feel I’m losing brain cells every time I laugh. It also covered male insecurities and awkward moments, but in a SMART way. I think what all the other ones lacked were character development. I liked watching two men bond with guy love. It was beautiful. 8.5
So what is that? 23 movies and a Broadway show? I’ve been enlightened. I hope I didn’t make a habit out of it. I can’t afford it. I have no idea how much money I spent on refreshments in theaters that are worth almost as much as the tickets… Damn rippoffs… Mmm… Nachos…
